if you're curvy, but black it's okay
i was reading the post today and came across this article:
rounding off their figures: for women of color, a fuller beauty standard
this article covered vogue's march issue (cover=jennifer hudson), sport's illustrated's swimsuit edition (cover=beyonce), as well as tyra's *gasp* 20 pound weight gain over a 10 year period... wow-big deal, right?
wapo believes that the reason black women's curves are acceptable is because we are more confident with the curves. we accept "muffin tops" and "don't care." even though it "may not be healthy." wow.
the article also touched on the "diva" and "oversexed" stereotypes of large black women; it mentioned mo'nique and how she made big to be beautiful. ok, that's cool.
all in all, interesting/strange read..take a look at it and tell me what you think:

Why isn't this acceptable on white girls? Why the cultural divide do you think?
According to this article, there is definitely a cultural divide. Personally, I feel that if anybody who is happy with their body is doing very well. We all have quirks no matter what size we are. The bigger picture here is society's view. I mean, whenever we can show society that there are WOMEN - not just black women who are proud of their bodies, then we've accomplished something without making a generalization as this article does.
Remember the Venus Hottentot? I need to do a post on that....fascinated me a few years ago and I don't think a lot of people even know about that story, but this Post story is nothing more than another iteration of that drama.
Thanks for the shout too! I love this little water cooler in the blogosphere too!:) Can't you tell I always check to see if you've put something new up?(lol)
wow - i am just reading about that sugar... unbelievable how she was not once referenced in this article!
